Power Rangers Massacre Wombats
by Rex Kobayashi
The Wommies returned to their spiritual home in Fuji, eagerly wanting to right the wrongs that we have started with this season. The boys in yellow arrived in good spirits, sensing that today was the day to turn the tide, and get our season on the right track. Oh how we were wrong…
The Wommies, led by skipper Ali, put the Rangers into bat, knowing that a few quick wickets and good pressure would get them on the ropes early doors. The first over was the stuff of dreams, with Zubair Hossain steaming in on his return to the team, and picking up the first wicket before all the fans could finish taking their seats. The boys were fired up, the energy in the field was unparalleled, some chirp between the slip corden and the batsmen…..we felt like we were on.
After the first 10 overs, this was when the horror movie kicked off. The Rangers top order unleashed a barrage of boundaries, everything seeming to be pinging straight off the middle of the bat with each swing. Boundary after boundary, a lost ball followed by another lost ball the very next delivery, it was biblical. Some say the scenes could be classed as a massacre. The Rangers finished up on the eye-watering total of 455, a bit larger than a hill to climb for the Wommies.
Our chase didn’t get off to the best start, losing a wicket in the first over (tit for tat), but Capt. Ali looked very solid with the bat, guiding his way to a well played 50, unfortunately, he lacked support from the rest of his top order. Mick (Jnr) Walker played very nicely for his 42, but again didn’t have the necessary back up from the others in the lineup. The boys in yellow finished their chase on 204 all out, a tad short, but a valiant effort from some individuals in the side. A special mention to debutant Shahir Ahmed, who came in at the tail and displayed some incredibly free-flowing batting, taking on the bowlers and smashing his way to a decent 39, and was well supported by the Wommies’ new specialist number 11, Big-man Bracefield.
It wasn’t our day, it was a humbling day, but one that we will learn from and has fired us up to get stuck into the next fixture. UTW!!
